Ocean City, Maryland

Ocean City.
Stay awhile.

Beach mornings. Boardwalk traditions. Bayside sunsets. The kind of getaway that makes “one more day” sound like a very good idea.

A little salt air goes a long way

Come for the beach.
Find your own Ocean City.

There is an Ocean City for the person who wants to do everything, and another for the person who wants to do absolutely nothing. You can chase the rides, split Boardwalk fries, and fill a weekend with activity. Or you can start with coffee facing the Atlantic and decide on the rest later. That mix is what makes this Maryland beach town such a satisfying escape: couples, families, and groups of friends can each make the trip their own.

Good reasons to put a trip on the calendar.

01

Sunfest returns October 22–25, 2026.

The Inlet end of the Boardwalk welcomes arts, crafts, food, and live music. The official schedule lists free performances at the Inlet, with separate ticketed shows at the Performing Arts Center. Start with the Sunfest guide to plan your visit.

02

Wine on the Beach joins the Sunfest weekend.

The 2026 event is listed for October 23–24. It is a ticketed addition, so check admission details separately if you want to include it. Find the event link on the official Sunfest page.

03

Winterfest gives the coast a holiday glow.

Winterfest of Lights is scheduled for November 19, 2026–January 2, 2027 at Northside Park. Check the date-specific schedule before going; some evenings have a special format, and weather can affect operations.

Let the ocean set the pace.

Ocean City’s ten-mile beach is the main attraction for good reason. Some days call for chairs, a good book, and a long stretch of doing very little. Others start with a shoreline walk before breakfast. Either way, the Atlantic does a lot of the work.

Try making one morning an early one. Watching the light change over the water gives you a different version of the town before the day gets busy. Then find breakfast, take your time, and let the biggest decision be whether you are ready to leave the beach yet.

Our favorite way to plan it: leave a real block of beach time in your itinerary. A vacation feels different when every hour is not already spoken for. In cooler months, trade the swim for a shoreline walk and bring a windproof layer.

The Boardwalk is part of the vacation.

Ocean City’s Boardwalk is made for wandering: shops, arcades, ocean views, and the familiar question of what to eat next. Come for a morning stroll, then return later for a different atmosphere as the day gives way to evening.

For classic amusement-park energy, look into Trimper Rides and Jolly Roger at the Pier. Check operating dates and individual ride availability, especially outside summer. You do not need to do every attraction to have a memorable evening; sometimes an arcade game, a shared treat, and a walk toward the Inlet are plenty.

Give the place a little context. The Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum, at the southern end of the Boardwalk, explores local history and the United States Life-Saving Service. It is a worthwhile change of pace—and a useful idea for a day when the weather shifts.

Save the evening for the bay.

The ocean gets the morning light. The bayside is where to turn your attention as the sun goes down. After a beach day, that change of view can make the evening feel like its own little getaway.

Northside Park in uptown Ocean City is an easy place to build that pause into your visit. Walking paths, playgrounds, and bayside piers give the whole group a reason to linger. Bring the camera, arrive before sunset, and leave yourself time to enjoy the view.

If you would rather make an outing of the water, browse boat tours, paddling options, or a cruise that fits your group. Confirm departure location, weather policies, and seasonal availability before building your day around it.

Come hungry. Leave room for one more stop.

Some of the best vacation decisions happen when someone says, “That looks good.” Ocean City gives you plenty of chances to follow that instinct, from a quick Boardwalk snack to a long dinner overlooking the water.

The Boardwalk classics

Start your list with Thrasher’s French Fries, Fisher’s Popcorn, and Dolle’s Candyland. Pick a favorite, share something, and save a treat for the ride home. Check individual opening hours for an off-season visit.

A proper seafood dinner

Make time for a crab cake, oysters, or a seafood meal that becomes part of the evening. Choose the restaurant for its menu and setting, then reserve ahead when your dates fall on a busy weekend.

A good mix is one casual grab-and-go meal, one dinner you look forward to, and a breakfast that nobody has to rush through. The town’s food and drink guide is a useful starting point for matching the options to your group.

Take a side trip to a wilder shore.

For a different coastal landscape, set aside time for Assateague Island National Seashore. Beaches, marsh views, and the possibility of seeing wild horses make it a rewarding change of pace. It is a separate outing from Ocean City, so allow time for the drive, exploring, and a stop at the visitor center.

From Ocean City, plan for the Maryland entrance via Route 611. The Maryland and Virginia entrances are not connected by a road through the island. Check current park conditions and entry information before setting out, and treat a horse sighting as a possibility rather than a promise.

Enjoy the horses from a distance. NPS asks visitors to stay at least 40 feet away. Never feed or touch them, and keep food secured. A zoom lens lets you enjoy the moment while giving these wild animals their space. Read the park’s viewing guidance.

A little sand in your shoes.
A little less on your mind.

Save this idea

Your Ocean City weekend,
without overplanning it.

Our suggested two-day plan leaves room for the weather, the season, and whatever your group feels like doing.

Day 01

Ocean air, Boardwalk favorites & sunset.

Morning: Start with a beach walk and breakfast. In suitable summer conditions, settle in for beach time; in cooler weather, make it a longer walk and a slower coffee stop.

Afternoon: Explore the Boardwalk, pick a snack, and choose an arcade, museum, or seasonal attraction.

Evening: Head bayside before sunset, then make dinner the final event rather than the thing you squeeze in between activities.

Day 02

Choose your kind of coast.

Nature option: Visit Assateague’s Maryland district for a change of scenery, then return for a late lunch.

Stay-in-town option: Enjoy more beach time, a walk at Northside Park, or a seasonal boat outing.

Before you leave: Take one last look at the water and pick up a treat for the trip home. If your dates match Sunfest or Winterfest, let the event take the place of another activity.

Choose your home base

Where you stay shapes the trip.

Start with the way you want to spend your days. Check the exact address, walking routes, and parking arrangements before booking; “Ocean City” covers more than one vacation experience.

Look for A good fit when…
Downtown / Boardwalk You want to walk to classic attractions, snacks, and the southern Boardwalk. Read recent reviews for noise and parking details.
Oceanfront farther north You want beach access to lead the day and are happy to make a separate trip downtown. Confirm the property’s actual beach access.
Bayside You like an evening water view. Confirm the view from your specific room or rental and your route to the ocean beach.
A condo or vacation rental You value extra space or a kitchen. Compare the total cost, including cleaning, parking, and other fees.

The practical part

Before you pack the car.

Is Ocean City worth visiting outside summer?

Yes—if you choose the trip to match the season. Fall can center on festivals, meals, and beach walks; winter brings a quieter coastal visit and holiday lights on scheduled dates. Check attraction hours instead of assuming the full summer lineup will be operating.

Can we enjoy it without driving everywhere?

A well-chosen location can put some activities within walking distance. The Coastal Highway Beach Bus is another option for traveling along town. Check the current transportation schedule for your dates. Assateague requires separate transportation planning.

What if it rains?

Swap beach time for a museum visit, an arcade, a long lunch, or another indoor activity. Keeping one flexible block in each day makes a weather change much easier to work around.

What should we check before we go?

Review the event calendar, weather, parking, restaurant hours, and any tour reservations. Before swimming, check surf conditions and lifeguard coverage. Pack layers for the waterfront, sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and a little room in the schedule.
